Gaia Biography Dave Hancock – Acoustic - Vocal Iain West – Bass - bvoc John Rose – Lead Guitar – bvoc Steve Booth – Drums The band formed back in 1996 whilst studying a music diploma at Barnsley college. The lads rehearsed hard for six months then surged into the regions music scene, taking only a few months before being accepted into some of the more prestigious venues around Yorkshire, playing their Three-guitar fronted, Dark, Passionate, and Mature Alternative Rock. (Leadmill, Boardwalk supporting Cyclefly, Devonshire Green Festival (Sheffield), Duchess of York (Leeds), Bradford Rio’s, Rock City (Nottingham), and Oxford’s Westminster college Summer Ball supporting Desmond Decker). After performing over 100 gigs in ‘97/98, nurturing a strong following in their region, and a self-produced EP CD – Verbal Resuscitation, a disastrous accident stole Gaia’s first guitarist and shortly after, the band had to compete in the quarter-finals of Carling’s National Battle of the Bands. This resulted in a stand-in guitarist, Carl (Substance), doing his utmost best, but the chemistry in-balance became the defining factor which resulted in the band’s exit from the competition and never really regaining the feel and momentum which was previously (with the old line-up) naturally apparent. The band decided to take time-out for two years to recoup their energies and direction. In May 2001, Dave and Steve (front man and drummer) exhausted their rest-bite and recruited a new Bass player, Iain (Over-easy, Strawberry Hill), and the threesome hammered a six month period of rehearsals and re-developed a solid rhythm section before recruiting Rossi (Whitchapel) on Lead guitar in August 2001. In November, the band began work on a 4-Track Promo CD EP – Soulwind. The CD’s first port of call landed them a Sky TV (Granada Men & Motors) performance, where the lads went to London’s TV Metropolis – Shepherds Bush White City, to record a 3-Track showcase which was aired in Oct/Nov 2002 on ‘Showcase TV’. The lads have just got themselves on February’s burbs.com compilation and are at present the band are starting to stir up their old fan base by revisiting the old stomping ground with their blend of Acoustic fronted, Sweet, Psychedelic, Mature, Folk, Rock tinged Elephant of a sound! In April 2003, the band will be starting to show off their talents and hard work by hitting their local music scene with a few charity events and contacting booking agent’s with the hope of impressing the national promotion companies and record companies and Managers. The band will also be recording a new EP, publishing a local music fanzine, namely BOM (Barnsley Original Music), running a rehearsal studio – ‘The Hive’, promoting a band night at a local venue (The Arches), and constantly developing their internet website (www.gaiauk.com), whilst continually building up their fan base. The lads have recorded their debut album and in 2006 are recording the bands second album. The lads have played with the likes of Desmond Dekker, Space Ritual, Here and Now, Kerbgrinder, Cyclefly, Four Day Hombre and more. A quality rock outfit.
